What is job shop scheduling? ›

The Job-Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP) is a widely studied combinatorial, NP-hard optimization problem. The aim of the problem is to find the optimum schedule for allocating shared resources over time to competing activities in order to reduce the overall time needed to complete all activities.

A job shop is set up to handle a variety of different products, each customized to specific client requirements and often produced in small quantities. In contrast, a batch production facility typically produces larger quantities of a single product before switching over to a different product.

The flexible job shop scheduling problem (FJSP) is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem, which has wide applications in the real world. The complexity and relevance of the FJSP have led to numerous research works on its modeling and resolution.

The job shop is organized by process, where assembly lines or continuous flow operations are organized in a product layout. In the latter layout, equipment or work processes are arranged according to the exact steps in which the product is made and the path for each part resembles a straight line.

Job scheduling is the process where different tasks get executed at pre-determined time or when the right event happens. A job scheduler is a system that can be integrated with other software systems for the purpose of executing or notifying other software components when a pre-determined, scheduled time arrives.

Examples of companies that would use the job shop manufacturing method are: a paint shop, a machine tool shop, a commercial printing shop, a machining center, and other factories that create customized products in small batches and offer customization.

Due to precision and/or tolerances, certain jobs have to run on particular machines, making scheduling a problem. And if those weren't problem enough, some jobs have outside processing to be done and some don't. Some have more than one outside process to be and some have none.

In a flow shop, the machinery equipment is geared to operate low flexibility due to the high standardization. On the other hand, job shop machinery is imperatively geared to be highly flexible due to the high customization.
