Much like Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light before it, Metro Exodus doesn’t skimp when it comes to endings. In keeping the same tradition, there are two Metro Exodus endings – a good ending and a bad ending, both of which require specific conditions to be fulfilled in order to be unlocked.
Naturally then, when it comes to knowing what those special prerequisites we’ve got your back – so without further ado, here is what you need to do in order to nab the good ending in Metro Exodus.
How Do You Get The Good Ending In Metro Exodus?
Simply put, getting the Metro Exodus good ending is all about survival, as a minimum of two of your companions must be alive by the time you reach the end of the game. This is because at the end of the story, Artyom is gravely wounded on account of a lethal dose of radiation exposure and requires a blood transfusion in order to survive.
Once the transfusion goes through, Artyom soon recovers and becomes the new leader of the Spartan Order, returning to Moscow once his friends are safe and revealing everything he knows about the outside world to the Metro survivors.
The kicker here though, is that in order for the blood transfusion to be successful at least two of Artyom’s friends need to be alive during this sequence. This is a little easier said than done though, as keeping Duke, Damir and Alyosha alive requires a very specific set of requirements to be fulfilled.
How To Save Duke In Metro Exodus
One of the most difficult companions to keep alive, Duke is a headstrong soldier who is quick to anger, and even quicker to get into combat. As such, keeping him breathing during the Volga chapter is quite the feat – but it is not impossible.
The first thing you should do consistently (and this applies to keeping the other two companions alive too), is that you should prioritise non-lethal force over deadly attacks on human adversaries, as failing to do so will badly affect the ending of the chapter.
Chiefly during the Volga chapter, there are three key things that you must do to save Duke and have him appear during the blood transfusion scene.
The first is that you must escape from the Church without being spotted. The best and most efficient way to achieve this is once you’ve entered the church, head to the top floor and then use the window as an escape route when the guards attempt to investigate the room.
The next thing to be done is that you must proceed to the boat and make your escape, not forgetting to stealth and stun the boat traders, rather than confront and kill them. Again, a clandestine approach is of utmost importance here.
Finally, and this is the difficult part, you must get to the cult leader without sending any of his men to the grave; this means frugal use of, again, stealth and stuns to get the job done. It’s worth noting that Artyom’s knife is off-limits too – as using it on enemies will count as a kill and thus affect the chapter ending negatively as a result.
How To Keep Alyosha Alive In Metro Exodus
Much like the non-lethal steps that you had to take in order to save Duke, so too must a similar strategy be employed to save Aloysha during the Taiga chapter where you encounter the Children of the Forest for the first time.
Here, as you stalk your way through the settlements of the Children of the Forest, you must not only avoid using lethal force, but you must also remain unseen and rescue all the prisoners that you come across.
Because the Children of the Forest are a fairly unadvanced lot, they prefer (or rather are forced to) carry crossbows instead of regular firearms, making dealing with them a lot easier than it would be otherwise as you can get close and stun them without having to worry about being poked full of bullet holes on the way in.
Once the prisoners have been rescued and no Children of the Forest have been hurt, Olga will make an appearance at the end of the chapter, permitting both Alyosha and Artyom safe passage through the territory and onto the next chapter.
How To Stop Damir From Dying In Metro Exodus
During your stint in the Caspian Sea, you’ll encounter Damir, one of the three companions that can be present at the end of the game during the crucial blood transfusion scene. Once again, the themes of non-lethal combat and stealth come to the fore in the Caspian Sea chapter.
This is because the apparent human enemies of the area, a faction of slaves, are a desperate bunch driven to acts of violence by a greedy Baron. As such, sneaking past them and using stuns wherever possible are the order of the day, while a range of side missions to rescue slaves from their overlords will also enamour Artyom to Damir yet further still.
Finally, the way to close the deal and ensure that Damir joins up with Artyom, is to discover a photo of Giul’s mother in a bunker that you come across while on the lookout for a set of special maps. Once you return and hand the photo to Giul, she accepts it gratefully and assuming you’ve not killed any slaves, Damir will throw his lot in with you and appear during Metro Exodus’ ending sequence.
What Do You Need To Do To Get The Bad Ending In Metro Exodus?
Comparatively speaking, the Metro Exodus bad ending requires far less effort to get than its rosy, sugar and sweetness counterpart. Essentially, it’s achieved by simply ‘failing’ the criteria needed for the good ending by not having enough surviving companions to complete Artyom’s much needed blood transfusion.
In this scenario, Artyom succumbs to radiation poison as he does not have enough blood for the transfusion, resulting in the remaining Spartans and a distraught Anna holding a funeral for him. In this ending, Artyom finds himself in spiritual limbo, surrounded by the spirits of other characters such as Khan, Miller and Bourbon in perpetuity.
